La Favorita: Italia ’90 Makeover

Palermo’s Stadio Renzo Barbera underwent a major transformation in preparation for the 1990 World Cup.

Chosen to represent Sicily in Italia ’90, a significant investment of 40 billion Lire modernised the historic venue, which had originally been built in the 1930s.

The stadium was essentially rebuilt, with only its iconic oval shape and the historic facade retained. Despite a tragic accident during construction, the renovations were completed on schedule, allowing the stadium to host crucial group-stage matches, including those featuring Ireland, the Netherlands, and Egypt.

These recently uncovered photos offer a rare glimpse into the late 1980s construction process. Today, Stadio Renzo Barbera, or La Favorita, stands as one of the most vibrant and recognisable stadiums in Italian football.
